27 God created man in his image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it, rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky, over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis chapter 1)
**************
Today, following Holy Eucharist, at our Parish, …as in many other Parishes all over the world… we have had the ‘Blessing of the Animals’, a tradition which goes back to the times of St.Francis (around the year 1220 a.D.). Whilst children raced and the older hurried home to bring their pets for blessings, church bells summoned and another Mass was celebrated. Eventually it struck noon and amongst the many ‘woofs’, ‘meows’ …and any other imaginable sound an animal could make… there was heard a prayer. A prayer of blessing which went something like this:
“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures.
You called forth fish in the sea,
birds in the air and animals on the land.
You inspired St. Francis to call all of them
his brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless these pets.
By the power of your love,
enable them to live according to your plan.
May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures!
Amen.”
(…well obviously that was said and prayed in Maltese not English! ;-)
29 “God said, “I have given you every seed-bearing plant which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree that bears fruit with seed. It will be for your food. 30 To every wild animal, to every bird of the sky, to everything that creeps along the ground, to everything that has the breath of life, I give every green plant for food.” So it was. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.” (Genesis chapter 1)
God …irrespective of what big bangs and other theories state… had lovingly and out of the void, created a world, beautifully adorning it with all sorts of elements and creatures. Blessing and sustaining it with and/or out of His Divine Providence.
This was all His doing! …it was all His!
…and He simply loved it: “it was very good.” !!!
Man, (finally?) realising how good God is burst into song! ...writing:
7
"Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea creatures and all the depths,
8 clouds and snow, hail and lightning,
storm winds that do his bidding,
9 you mountains and all you hills,
you fruit trees and cedars,
10 you wild beasts and tame animals,
you creeping things and winged fowl.
11 Kings of the earth and nations,
princes and all rulers of the world,
12 young men and maidens,
old and young together –
13 let them praise the name of the Lord.
For his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven."
(Psalm 148:7-13)
And so it was!
Throughout the ages, unto this very day, and in the future, God’s praises have been, are being and will continue to be written, sung and indeed lived by His Creation and all sorts of creatures!
…is it true worship?
…am i truly worshipping?
----------------------
God deserves our praises!
ALL creation is called to worship!
-----------------------------------
Yet one time, when speaking, God said:
8 “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 9 The worship they offer me is worthless, for they only teach human rules.” (Matthew chapter 15)
Today, 5th October 2008, at the same time I, along with fellow Catholics, was celebrating Mass, at the same time the animals were receiving blessing, at the same time I am writing this, God repeats these words!
8 “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 9 The worship they offer me is worthless, for they only teach human rules.” (Matthew chapter 15)
------------------------
We'll stand by our young, agreeing to all they say,
encourging them to experiment rather than instructing them...
We'll encourage 'creativity' no matter what form it takes
...after all they're curious,
...its ok to flood the minds of the young
with all sorts of lies, rubbish and dirt.
Furthermore we ourselves will provide them
with material possessions and (destructive) leisure.
…they DO want to have fun so why should we leave them yearning?
We’ll allow the young to dress indecently and do as they please,
Handing them contraceptives rather than teaching them to abstain…
And then we’ll use a (special) vacuum machine
to rip apart and suck the life of a child.
...or a pair of tweezers to break the bones
and crush the skull of the unborn.
We'll sit back relaxing, while waging wars
and we'll send the youth to fight them.
We’ll send them proudly …and should they die...
...we'll say its a ‘heroic’ death!
We’ll do business: demand more work and pay lower wages.
We’ll produce and provide a lesser good or service and raise prices.
(they won’t notice …we’ll do it in a subtle way)
We’ll allow same-sex ‘marriage’
and give the same the ‘opportunity’ to adopt.
Rather than caring and supporting the sick
and elderly through difficult moments,
we’ll suggest that they leave this world of suffering
…we’ll even ‘help’ them do that!!!
We’ll take drugs…
We’ll ignore the needy…
We’ll hit wives and batter children…
AND
We’ll tear families apart with divorce…
(…that’s just to mention a few…)
--------------------
No wonder I keep 'hearing' those words!!
"This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, for they only teach human rules." (Matthew chapter 15:8,9)
Wow didn’t I strike a negative note?!
…but it’s the truth!
We do that!
(...actually i suspect we do worse too)
So maybe now’s the time to pray today’s psalm: God of hosts, turn again, we implore,
look down from heaven and see.
Visit this vine and protect it,
the vine your right hand has planted.
And we shall never forsake you again: give us life that we may call upon your name. God of hosts, bring us back; let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
(Psalm 79: 15,16, 19,20)
May we …i… truly
cherish and respect life!
----------------------------------
(This which i have written is simply what i have learnt and thought about. Though i believe it to be correct it does not neccessarily mean it actually is correct. ...its just me thinking and reflecting a little ;-)

The Catholic Church has always taught us to love and respect life. The following adresses will link to two Encyclical Letters: Evangelium Vitea and Humanea Vitea respectively:
